Madelyn V. Young

Dr. Young is an associate professor of economics. Her research interests are in the areas of labor and urban economics, and economic pedagogy.

Dr. Young received her PhD in economics from Georgia State University, her MA in economics from the University of Notre Dame, and her BA in economics and English – with a concentration in writing from Indiana University at South Bend. She was the 2009 recipient of the Kathryne Amelia Brown Excellence in Teaching Award, won two teaching awards as a graduate student at Georgia State University and the annual “Excellence in Writing” Award at Indiana University at South Bend.

Over the last several years, Dr. Young has conducted study/travel programs to Finland, Russia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, England, Italy and Ireland. She also participated in a Rotarian Group Study Exchange to Brazil, and received a Malone Fellowship from the National Council on US/Arab Relations to visit Saudi Arabia. In January 2008 she participated in the Iceland Exchange Program and taught Labor Economics at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik.

Selected Publications & Presentations

Dr. Young’s publications include articles on women’s leadership, interfirm wage differentials, and the spatial distribution of black employment. She was one of the featured speakers at “Woman Up! Leadership Symposium” at the University of South Carolina Upstate, and is a regular presenter at the Gulf Coast Economics Association’s annual teaching conference.
